Final Grade Calculator
Calculate what grade you need on your final exam to get your desired overall course grade.
Calculate What You Need on Your Final Exam
The Final Grade Calculator is a "what if" tool designed for students to determine the score they need on their final exam to achieve a desired overall grade in a course. By inputting your current grades and their weights, along with the weight of your final exam, you can strategically plan your study efforts.
🎓 How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
- Final Exam Info: In the top part of the form, enter how much your final exam is worth (its weight as a percentage) and the overall grade that you would like to get in the class.
- Current Grades: In the bottom section, enter your current grades for each component of the class (e.g., homework, quizzes, midterms). For each item:
- Enter a name for the assignment (optional).
- Enter the grade you received (as a percentage, e.g., 90 for 90%).
- Enter the weight of that assignment (as a percentage).
- Add More Rows: If you have more than the initial number of grade items, press the "Add Row" button to add more lines.
- Calculate: Once all your current grades and weights are entered, press the "Calculate Final Grade" button. The result will show the percentage you need on your final exam.
📝 The Calculation Explained
The calculator determines the required final exam score with the following logic:
- Calculate Current Earned Points: It first calculates how many points you've already earned towards your final grade. For each item, it computes:
Earned Points = (Grade % / 100) × Weight %
It then sums these points up. - Determine Points Needed from Final: It subtracts your current earned points from your desired overall grade.
Points Needed = Desired Grade % - Current Earned Points
- Calculate Required Final Exam Score: Finally, it calculates the percentage score you need on the final exam to make up those needed points, based on the exam's weight.
Required Score % = (Points Needed / Final Exam Weight %) × 100
The calculator will show you a step-by-step breakdown of this process with your numbers when you get your result. It will also warn you if the total weight of all assignments (including the final) does not add up to 100%, as this is a common requirement for weighted grade calculations.
💡 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What if the total weight of my assignments doesn't add up to 100%?
- The calculator will still perform a calculation, but it will warn you about the discrepancy. A total weight not equal to 100% usually indicates a mistake in entering the weights from your syllabus. Please double-check your course outline for the correct weighting of each assignment.
- What if the calculator says I need over 100% on the final?
- This means that based on your current grades and the weight of the final exam, it is mathematically impossible to achieve your desired overall grade, even with a perfect score on the final. You may need to adjust your goal to a more realistic target.
