Grading Scale Used (Default)

Letter grades map to points as follows:

  • A+ = 4.3
  • A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • D- = 0.7
  • F = 0.0

For percentage input, a common mapping is used (e.g., 93-100% = A/4.0). Point value inputs are used directly if they fall within the scale (0.0 to 4.3). Grades like P, NP, I, W are ignored.

Understanding Your GPA: A Comprehensive Guide

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a key indicator of academic performance. This GPA Calculator helps you easily determine your semester GPA and, optionally, your cumulative GPA by factoring in previous academic records. It now supports various grade input formats for maximum flexibility.

🎓 How to Use the GPA Calculator

Follow these steps to calculate your GPA:

  1. Select Grade Input Format: Choose your preferred method for entering grades directly on the calculator:
    • Letter Grade: Standard A, B, C, etc. (e.g., A, B+, C-).
    • Percentage: Numerical grades from 0 to 100.
    • Point Value: Direct grade points (e.g., 4.0, 3.3).
Changing the grade format will clear any currently entered grades, so set this first if needed.
  2. Enter Course Details: For each course in the current semester, input:
    • Course Name (Optional): Helps you identify the course.
    • Credits: The number of credit hours for the course.
    • Grade: Enter the grade according to the format selected.
  3. Add More Courses: Click the "➕ Add Course" button to include all courses. You can remove courses using the trash icon.
  4. Prior GPA (Optional): Click the "⚙️ Prior GPA Settings" button to enter your prior cumulative GPA and total prior credits if you want to calculate your new overall cumulative GPA.
  5. Calculate: Once all current semester courses (and optional prior GPA data) are entered, click the "Calculate GPA" button.

The calculator will display your Semester GPA, Cumulative GPA (if prior data was provided), a summary of total quality points and credits, and a visual breakdown of how each course contributed.

📝 How GPA is Calculated

GPA is calculated using quality points and credit hours:

  1. Grade Points Conversion:
    • Letter Grades: Converted to points based on a standard scale (e.g., A+=4.3, A=4.0, B=3.0). The default scale is displayed below the calculator.
    • Percentage Grades: Mapped to grade points using a common scale (e.g., 93-100% = 4.0 (A), 83-86% = 3.0 (B)).
    • Point Values: Used directly, assuming they align with the institution's scale (e.g., 0.0 to 4.3).
Grades like P (Pass), NP (No Pass), I (Incomplete), and W (Withdrawal) typically do not affect your GPA and are ignored if entered in Letter Grade format. For Percentage/Point formats, ensure you're entering grades that contribute to GPA.
  2. Quality Points per Course: For each course, Quality Points = (Converted Grade Point Value) × (Course Credits).
  3. Total Quality Points (Current Semester): Sum of Quality Points from all current semester courses that count towards GPA.
  4. Total Credits for GPA (Current Semester): Sum of credits from all current semester courses that count towards GPA.
  5. Semester GPA: Total Quality Points (Current Semester) / Total Credits for GPA (Current Semester).
  6. Cumulative GPA (if prior data is provided):
    • Prior Total Quality Points = Prior GPA × Prior Credits
    • Overall Total Quality Points = Prior Total Quality Points + Current Semester Total Quality Points
    • Overall Total Credits = Prior Credits + Current Semester Total Credits for GPA
    • Cumulative GPA = Overall Total Quality Points / Overall Total Credits

💡 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why are credits important in a GPA calculation?
Credits represent the weight of a course. A grade in a 4-credit course will have a larger impact on your GPA than the same grade in a 2-credit course. This ensures that more intensive courses contribute more to your overall average.
What is the difference between Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA?
Your Semester GPA is your average grade for a single semester only. Your Cumulative GPA is the average of all the grades you've earned across all semesters you've completed so far.
