This calculator uses standard emission factors to convert your energy and fuel consumption into an estimate of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions. CO₂e is a metric used to compare the emissions from different greenhouse gases based on their global-warming potential.
- Electricity:
Electricity Emissions (kg CO₂e) = kWh used × Emission Factor for Electricity
The emission factor for electricity varies greatly by region, depending on how the electricity is generated (e.g., from coal, natural gas, hydro, or solar). This calculator uses an average value representative of the U.S. grid. - Natural Gas:
Natural Gas Emissions (kg CO₂e) = Therms used × Emission Factor for Natural Gas
- Transportation (Gasoline):
Transport Emissions (kg CO₂e) = (Miles driven / MPG) × Emission Factor per Gallon
This first calculates the total gallons of gasoline consumed and then multiplies it by the emission factor for burning one gallon of gasoline.
